What you're actually going to dive

Ripping currents, manta trains, grey reef sharks, and stunning coral walls. Visibility runs 20–30m and water stays around 27°C year-round. Work is almost entirely guiding and advanced diving. Entry-level instruction is limited and most operators expect you to handle strong current conditions from day one.

What it's like to live here

AT WORK

Most dive pros do 2–3 dives per day on full-day boat trips. Liveaboard crews work trip-by-trip, sometimes 7–10 days continuously. Days start early: loading gear, setting tanks, briefing guests for fast-current dives. The pace is expedition-style, not resort.

AFTER WORK

Labuan Bajo is the main base, with cafes, sunset bars, and a tight-knit dive pro scene. Days off are for island-hopping, freediving, or short treks. Social but relaxed, and evenings tend to end early ready for dawn dives.

What visa do you need

You need a Work KITAS sponsored by your dive centre, which costs around USD $2,000/year. Some shops cover it in full; others deduct it in instalments from your monthly wage. The legal minimum for foreign work permits is Instructor level. It is extremely difficult for non-Indonesians to legally work as divemasters in Indonesia. Visa rules change frequently. Working without the correct permit is illegal. Verify current requirements with the Ministry of Manpower at kemnaker.go.id or directly with your operator before committing to any role.
