What is diving in Cairns like?
Outer reefs, coral gardens, turtle bommies, white-tip reef sharks, and the June–July dwarf minke whale parade on the Northern Ribbon Reefs. Visibility averages 10–20m; water runs 24–29°C depending on season. Easy conditions and consistent access, with enough variety across sites like Hastings Reef, Flynn Reef, and the Cod Hole to hold interest across a full season.
What is life like working in Cairns?
At work
Day boats load around 06:45 from the Cairns Marina and return by 15:30, running two or three dives per day to outer reef platforms. Hastings, Flynn, Norman, and Moore Reef are the main rotations. Instructors run OW skills on fixed moorings, lead DSDs, and manage snorkel tours. Guides cover certified groups across the boat. Expect 60–90 dives per month in high season. Tank swaps, gear rinse, and student admin round out the afternoon.
After work
Staff typically share flats within ten minutes of the marina, in suburbs like Manunda, Parramatta Park, or the northern beaches. Evenings mean cheap parmas and jug specials at Gilligan's. Days off are for the Cairns lagoon, road trips to Port Douglas, or a weekend aboard to the SS Yongala. A functioning city means supermarkets, gyms, and reliable internet alongside the dive community.
